Struggling with Debt? Need help?
Free debt counselling from an award winning charity
At St John's we are pleased to be working in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), a national debt support and advice charity that works through a network of centres based in local churches. St John's runs the Penge Centre which covers Penge and the surrounding area.
Through our centre, we offer hope and a solution to anyone in debt through a unique, in-depth service. We aim to show God’s love in action by providing sustainable poverty relief through debt advice, support and practical help.
The service is offered completely free of charge.
To find out more about the work of CAP, please visit their website. If you are in debt and would like to find out how you can access free debt advice and support, please contact CAP head office on freephone 0800 328 0006. You will then be assigned to the nearest debt centre to your home.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is CAP just for Christians?
No. CAP helps anyone regardless of their religious beliefs. CAP aims to ensure that no-body receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of race, nationality, religion, age, gender, marital status, sexual preference or disability.
Does is cost anything?
No. Our service is completely free. We do offer people the opportunity to give donations to the charity. This is completely voluntary and you won't be asked unless you have worked with us for at least six months. Whether you choose to give a donation or not, you will always receive the same service. Any money that is donated will go towards helping more families out of debt.
Will my creditors cooperate with you?
Yes. We have worked with over 1,000 companies within the finance industry and are well respected. This means that councils, utilities, mortgage companies and other creditors work with us because they have seen the results of our involvement. They know we offer fair repayments based on what you can afford.
HOW WE CAN HELP - THE STEPS TO FREEDOM
1. HOME VISIT
Phone the freephone number. After you call CAP they will talk with you and assign a Debt Coach and Support Worker from your local CAP Centre who will visit you in your own home. The Debt Coach will collect key details from you regarding your income and outgoings and report this back to CAP Headquarters. All information is held in strictest confidence.
2. AN EFFECTIVE BUDGET
A realistic budget is then worked out at CAP Headquarters by prioritising your essential bills, negotiating affordable payments with each creditor and stopping unfair interest and charges where possible. The Debt Coach from St John's will then visit you again to explain the budget and the payments you will need to make.
3. CAP ACCOUNT
A CAP Account is then set up for you. This acts like a simple bank account. You will need to make one monthly payment into your account to cover your debts. CAP will then distribute this on your behalf. You can also make savings in your CAP Account.
4. INSOLVENCY / BANKRUPTCY
If you are in severe debt then CAP can walk you through insolvency, like petitioning for bankruptcy.
5. DEBT-FREE AND BEYOND
You will use your CAP Account to repay your debts. You will be supported by a team at CAP Headquarters until you are debt-free.
